Richmond (South Africa) : on and off main roads

As we were already familiar with the popular routes to Cape Town along the coast and through the Karoo, the plan was to take minor roads through unknown territory and also to avoid the busy national roads – and their share of crazy drivers! It takes longer, but you see more when you four-way stop street your way through a country town or are slowed down by gravel roads. The two hours we spent on the main Johannesburg to cape Town road was like being in a different world: lots of trucks, fast driving, sparkling service stations, fast food joints and flashy cars. Camping in Richmond was different too. No lawn, hard ground, and tennis courts instead of a pool.
