Tofo (Mozambique) : beaching it

Tofo was the place for us: a spacious camp ground complete with kitchen behind the dunes of kilometers of empty beach, fresh seafood from local fishermen and a good crowd. We made good friends with Manuela and Volker who have been in Africa on their motorbikes for the last three years. Together we spent many slow mornings, lazy afternoons on the beach and quiet evenings together chatting about everything under the sun. After many miles since Cameroon we really enjoyed just beaching the days away. Annabella went on an Ocean Safari to see whale sharks (and snorkel with them!) and I went for a dive at Giant’s Castle. Manta rays come to this off-shore reef at a depth of about 30 metres to visit so-called cleaning stations where small fish attend to the mantas. Unfortunately the mantas had their day off. Nevertheless, being immersed in the ocean four kilometers from the shore was an impressive visit of another world.
While in Tofo, maybe appropriately so in such a place, I read an interesting article in “Le Monde Diplomatique” titled “Sleepless in Seattle – The new work disowns time”. In the conclusion it is stated that the growing suffering due to the lack of time is also sending (other) signals. It does not signalize a dwindling need to do useful work, instead of just having it. It does signalize however, the desire for unity of work, action and muse; the desire for a life which empowers us the freedom to do something else with time than what modern times is doing with us.
As the article appeared in German with the title “Uebernaechtigt in Seattle – Die neue Arbeit enteignet die Zeit” here is the German sumary and quote: Im Schluss wird gesagt, dass das wachsende Leiden an der Zeitnot auch (andere) Zeichen setzt. “Es signalisiert nicht das Schwinden des Beduerfnisses, sinvolle Arbeit zu leisten, statt nur Arbeit zu haben, wohl aber die Sehnsucht nach einer Versoehnung von Arbeit, Taetigkeit und Musse. Nach einem Leben, das uns zu der Freiheit befaehigte, etwas anderes aus der Zeit zu machen, als die modernen Zeiten mit uns machen.”
We spent almost three weeks in Tofo together with Vilki (German) and Manu (Austrian), Werner (German), Keke (England) and Nicki (England), and Sue (England). Then it was time to say goodbye and wish each other well on the next leg. Volki and Manu with their dilema of going to South America or towards Asia, Werner with his planned sejour in Africa, Kek with per planned studies of primates in the DRC, Nicki on her world trip, and Sue with her project(s) in the area. We had a fantastic time together and wondered if we would meet again except in cyberspace.
