Nkhotakota (Malawi) : southbound along the sleepy lake shore

Despite our reluctance to leave Nkhata Bay it was great to be back on the bike after two weeks at the Kupenja Lodge. Kupenja Lodge is a special place in that it is the base for project work done by volunteers at a local, grass roots level. These include support at an orphanage, small scale fruit drying and mushroom farming, teaching work and an information centre. Locals visit the Kupenja to play a game of Bowe or chess, or just to chat and exchange ideas with travelers. We very much enjoyed our time with the staff and volunteers there, in particular Jossie and Amy. Thanks a lot for a great time and keep up your valuable effort.
The lakeshore road is very quiet with only a few small towns along its length. There are many small villages however, and there are always people to be seen. Be it two-up on a bicycle or on foot, nobody is in a hurry here. With only a few clouds on the sky and the temperature at 26 ° C we thoroughly enjoyed the 220 km afternoon ride at a leisurely pace. We stayed at the Nkotakota Pottery 10 kilometres south of town where you can watch the skilled artisans at work and enjoy a beautiful stretch of beach.
