Lambaréné (Gabon) : in the good hands of Sister Elva

We left at a record late start (16h00!) into the rush-hour knowing that we would arrive in the dark. With only the odd car on the road after nightfall and no moon it was quite eery travelling through the black forest. And then the surprise at the mission in Lambaréné: Sister Elva from Arentina. Annabella was happy as ever and it gave us the chance to get to know another perspective of life and experiences in Africa. Staying at the mission on the island of Lambarene in the rainforest was relaxing and special. Our only moves were a stoll down to the makeshift cluster of shacks down by the river for bread and other supplies, an a visit of the Albert Schweitzer hospital. Of particular interest was to read about Schweitzer’s meditation on the enigma of how to become fulfilled on earth. His conclusion: Respect for all living things – humans, animals and plants.
We could easily have stayed in Lambaréné longer as Sister Elva spoiled us with gifts like fresh eggs and vegetables from their garden and she even threw in a free night.
