Buea (Cameroon) : in the cool mist of Mt. Cameroon
N 04°09.675' E 009°13.984'
Now that the road was better, or at least drier, we could enjoy the beautiful jungle scenery. Traffic is sparse and life is hard here. We see people carry heavy loads on their backs (eg. Bananas and cassava) which they retrieve from the forest. The poverty in this remote area is imminent, and on passing through the tiny settlements the kids greet us with shouts of ‘white man, white man’. It was a long day of travelling ( 6 hours on the bike + stops for 250 km), but luckily the rain gods were in recess and we only got a few sprinkles as we made our way up to Buea at 990 metres. It was pleasant to be in a cooler climate and from the spacious and tranquil grounds of the Presbytherian Mission on the slopes of Mt. Cameroon (4100 m) there were fantastic views onto the river delta in the morning (before the mist engulfed us). The mission has a comunal kitchen (so I got the treat of Annabella’s gnocchis!) and even a cyber cafe!
