Lomé (Togo) : West Africa’s pleasant capital

Going south from Kpalimé is a beatiful ride past Togo’s highest mountain, Mt. Agu (986 m), through more garden-like countryside. 40 km of untarred road quickly took us out of the fairy tale as the downpours of the last few days had left the surface somewhat slippery and left a fair number of puddles. Doing this stretch with well worn road tyres gave us a small tast of what’s up ahead. The new tyres will stay part of our luggage until we have crossed Nigeria.
After only a few days here we both really like the Togolese. Be it asking for directions, eating a few kebabs on the roadside or stopping for a drink, there is always friendliness, respect humor and sincerity. And the capital portrays the same spirit. Our little hotel with sea view is across the road from the beach, which with soccer matches on every day and little beach bars reminds me of Venice Beach (in LA).The one major difference is, however, that there is no law enforcing personel to be seen anywhere and the athmosphere is peaceful as ever – even though we are only 200 meters from the busy border with Ghana.
