Kumasi (Ghana) : Ashanti capital

The solid cooked breakfast in the dining room underlined that we were now in anglophone territory and we were thankful for it as it was difficult to get a bite to eat on the 370 km to Kumasi, the capital of the once powerful Ashanti empire. Nevertheless we were quite content with all the green under the deep blue sky and the smooth tarmac. 20 km before Kumasi it was game over, however, as the road turned into a dust bowl and you had to fight your way through the ever-denser traffic. The climax was ending up boxed-in in the mini-bus terminal after a wrong turn in Ghana’s second largest city notorious for its traffic jams! For the first time on the trip the bike’s oil temperature rose steadily and we were thus forced to wait it out in a quiet side street before continuing with proper directions. We never got to feel at home in Kumasi, but the day-trip to Lake Bosumtwi, dedicated to the God Twi, a 100 m deep and 3 km wide Crater Lake was fantastic. Next time we would come to spend a few days.
