Cape Coast (Ghana) : Forts from a dark era

The drive through green rolling hills on back roads down to the coast was beautiful. Ghana’s coast is known for its forts from the slave-trading era. Millions of slaves were shipped to the Americas from here and millions died a terrible death under the extremly harsh conditions aboard. It was thus maybe appropriate that our expectations of finding deserted tropical beaches here were not met. For these we would have had to travel west towards Ivory Coast, but as we soon had an important rendezvous in Accra we stayed put for a few days and then headed towards the capital. Again we didn’t feel very at ease here and as a result were not too sorry to skip the western coastline.
