Atimpoku (Ghana) : in paradise

We came here to see the wall that holds back the world’s largest dam and foung paradise on the shores of the lower dam. Did we expect to camp 20 meters from the water in the grounds of an upmarket resort run by a successful German motorcyclist, Adi, and his Ghanian wife? No, and nor did we think the dam wall which holds back a lake with a surface of about 12000 square kilometers would be so small. In any case, it did not take long to find our rhythm: 1 km swim at 06h00, DIY breakfast under the thatched roof next to our tent, a stroll to the village for the daily supplies in the early afternoon, sundowners to some tales from Ghana by Adi and light out by 22h00. Adi for example told us that in the next town of 7000 people there were 35 different churches! We had already been aware of the Ghanian passion for religions/cults as words Jesus or God appear on practically every sign board be it a hair dresser, bakery or workshop. We wondered if this had anything to do with our negative perception of Ghanas people. Whatever the reason may be, our stay on the Volta River was a grand finale to our stay in Ghana and even our hosts tried to persuade us to stay.
