Porto Novo (Benin) : small-town capital

With a few coconuts as gifts from our hosts (after a photo session of them sitting on the bike by the local photographer!) we headed straight for Benin’s capital, not stopping in chaotic Cotonou. With its small-town feel and location on a lagoon it was the perfect place to take a deep breath before entering Nigeria. Even some of the locals were a bit nervous of us going there by bike, but what was reassuring was that they did not have first hand experience. They had never been in Nigeria; the same is the case with negative talk by other travellers. Everyone we had spoken to who actually had first-hand experience was quite positive.
