Opuwo (Namibia) : in Himba Country

With only 1.million people living on almost one million square kilometres there is lots of open space in Namibia. It was almost boring without any potholes to keep you awake as you glide across the flat landscape. On arrival in Opuwo, a village with only a few thousand inhabitants, we are reminded that we are still in Africa when we see proud Himba people with their shiny treated skin and particular head dress in the streets. At the petrol station tyey mingle around new 4WDs looking for opportunities to pose for a few dollars or sell some craftwork. The contrast is even starker in the wide aisles of the large supermarket where topless Himba women rub shoulders with neatly dressed Italian tourists wearing designer sunglasses.
