Chioulo (Angola) : from mission to mission

S 16°31.964' E 014°51.985' (altitude: 1123 m)
At the mission in Lubango we had met a padre from the Chioulo mission and he had promptly invited us. About thirty kilometres north of Xangongo a two kilometre tar road branches off from the piste and at its end there is a little church. As I turned off the bike in front of the white-washed church with its coloured windows, padre Augustinho came out of the door with a bible in his hand. African synchronisation?! As the border is closed on Sundays we got a two day rest and the full-board hospitality at the mission. Although we were in no dire straits and our vehicle is somewhat futuristic in an Angolan context, we almost felt that we were in a bygone era. For the people at the mission having visitors is, as for us, a means of having contact with another world, other thoughts and different ideas.
