Kafountine (SEN) : La Casamanse (the kings house)
N 12°55.778' W 016°44.634'
Another border without any problems, on the contrary it was guite emotional as we were ending our very pleasant stay in Gambia and were welcomed so warmly in Senegal. With the Casamanse's problems sorted out, for the moment anyway, the name of this region rich in agriculture, vegetation and bird life could not be more appropriate. The harmony is reflected by the people's calmness and their all-day smiles. Here the only rush-hour occurs when the dozens of pirogues with up to 30 fishermen on board return from the day's fishing an the beach turns into a (fish) stock exchange. We too did our daily, ritual trading (up to 1 Euro) to then retreat to our camp Le Kumpoo (the witch-doctor) run by two French personalities: one the sole survivor of the tragic 2002 ferry disaster in Senegal and the other an ex French Foreign Legions man. Another place a month could go by without us noticing. Strangely enough, for the last two days we were reminded of Zurich as the sky turned a uniform grey and the sun was only occasionally visible as a small shiny silver disk through the dust-laden air brought in from the arid hinterland. Here some temperature specs: 23°C in our room, 28°C outside the room under the thach-covered interior courtyard, 37°C under the trees in the campement. It was time to move on.
