Nouhandibou (MAU) : into Mauretania
N 20°54.495' W 017°03.197'
Before entering Mauretania we spent the night 80 km before the border where there is a hotel, a petrol station and a fictitious town with only a few souls to be seen. Maybe we were trying to mime what not long ago was obligatory: regrouping the convoi here for the guided border crossing the next day through mined nomansland. The only difficulty now is to negotiate the terrible, and in parts sandy 4 km track between the border posts. In fact we saw four other bikers who got stuck because they strayed into deep sand and all but one took a tumble! With the border cleared we got to see our first sensation in Mauretania at close range: supposedly the world's heaviest train haugling 150+ wagons of iron from the interior through the desert to Nouhandibou.
